The Newest Member of the Playday Family

皆さん、こんにちは！

My name is Shirley Desiderato. I’m 25 years old and I was born in the sunny south of France. My dad’s work took me all around the world – England, Indonesia, Malaysia, Venezuela, Australia – where I was lucky enough to enter the international school circuit. At these international schools, I met people from all over the world. While my new friends came from different backgrounds and myself and were culturally different, we were the same. We all wanted to learn, make friends, and have fun. This sparked my interest in exploring new cultures, not only to see how we differ but how we are similar.

私の名前はシャーリー・デジデラートです。太陽の降り注ぐ南フランス出身の25歳です。父親の仕事の関係で世界中をまわりました。イングランド、インドネシア、マレーシア、ベネズエラ、オーストラリアなど、幸いインターナショナルスクールに通える環境でした。インターナショナルスクールでは、世界中から来た人たちに出会いました。新しい友達も私自身も全く違う環境から来て文化も異なりますが、私たちは皆同じでした。みんな学習し、友達を作り、楽しみたいのです。このことが、私たちが異なるということだけではなく、似ているということを見て、新しい文化を探索するという私の興味をそそりました。

I went to university in Portland, Oregon. Oregon is a beautiful state nestled between California and Washington, north and south respectively. There I studied applied Linguistics with a special focus on the educational arena and I supplemented my studies with a minor in Spanish and a TESL certificate. Portland is a beautiful city with much to offer and I feel lucky to have spent my college years there.

オレゴン州のポートランドの大学に通いました。オレゴンは、カリフォルニア州とワシントン州の間にそれぞれ北南に挟まれた美しい州です。そこで私は、教育に重点を置いた言語学を学び、スペイン語とTESL(第二言語としての英語教授法)を副専攻科目として学びました。ポートランドは見所が多く美しい都市で、私は大学時代をそこで過ごせてラッキーだと思っています。

In Portland, I worked with disadvantaged youth at a Portland Public school. The team I was part of helped organize and facilitate after school programs to provide kids with subjects that Portland Public Schools were no longer able to offer.I also volunteered to teach English to adults and tutored ESL students at my university.

 

ポートランドでは、ポートランド公立学校で恵まれない子供たちに関わる仕事をしていました。私が所属していたチームは、ポートランド公立学校ではもう実施できない教科を子供たちに提供する放課後プログラムを企画し促進する手助けをしていました。また、大学ではボランティアで大人やESLの生徒に英語を教えていました。

 

I moved to Nagasaki in February 2013. During my first year in Japan, I taught English at an eikaiwa in Nagasaki. I worked with kids between the ages of 6 months and 13 years old.

2013年2月に長崎に越してきました。日本での最初の年は、長崎の英会話教室で英語を教えていました。6～13歳の子供を担当していました。

 

The nice thing about working with kids is that everything is new to them. They always seem to be fascinated by the world around them. When I work with kids, it allows me to, once again, become awestruck by the wonders around us.

子供にかかわる仕事をすることの良いところは、彼らにとって全てが初めてだということです。子供たちはいつも、周りの世界に興味をかき立てられます。私が子供にかかわる仕事をするとき、もう一度私たちの身の回りの不思議さにとても感激させられます。

 

I am very excited to be a part of the Playday team and to be part of an environment where kids come to learn and have fun! My goal is to bring enthusiasm and quality learning experiences to our community. 

プレイデイのチームの一員になり、子供たちが学習し、楽しむ環境の中の一員になることをとても楽しみにしています！私のゴールは、私たちの地域に熱意と質の良い学習経験をもたらすことです。
