Rain Stick Craft

In the conclusion to our weather unit, we made rain sticks to mimic the sound of falling rain. Here are two different ways to make them at home.

Rain Stick With PET Bottle

Materials

  • Empty PET bottle
  • A box of toothpicks
  • Rice or another small grain
  • Glue or tape
  • Stickers and colorful tape as decorations

Instructions

  1. Make sure the PET bottle is empty and dry.
  2. Fill the bottle with a box of toothpicks.
  3. Pour in uncooked rice or grains and leave an empty space of about 4 cm at the top. Slowly turn the bottle back and forth to check the sound. You can add or remove toothpicks and rice until you get a sound you like.
  4. Be sure to seal the bottle with glue or tape when you are finished.
  5. Decorate the bottle with stickers and tape.
